A prop trading challenge is designed to evaluate how a trader manages risk and performs within a defined set of trading conditions. The important part is not simply reaching a profit target. A trader also needs to understand the rules that govern drawdown, position risk, trading behaviour, and account management.
Start with the rules
Before placing a trade, read the challenge specifications carefully. Pay particular attention to the account objective, permitted markets, drawdown methodology, restrictions, and any consistency or trading-day requirements that apply.
- Account objective: understand what the challenge is asking you to demonstrate.
- Risk limits: know how drawdown and other loss limits are calculated.
- Trading conditions: understand which instruments and trading methods are permitted.
- Operational rules: know how orders, positions, and account activity are handled.
Build around risk first
A sensible approach is to define acceptable risk before thinking about the profit target. Position size, stop placement, and maximum exposure should be determined before the order is submitted.
The objective is not to trade as much as possible. It is to demonstrate that your trading process can operate within defined risk limits.
Measure the process
Keep a record of setups, entries, exits, risk, mistakes, and results. A challenge becomes much easier to evaluate when you can distinguish a good process from a lucky outcome.
